Job Description: Program Director

Status: Full Time, Exempt or Part Time

Compensation: $20,000-$40,000 per year

Supervisor: Executive Director

Scope and Complexity: The Program Director plays a key leadership role at Overlook Retreat and Camp Ministries. This position is focused on supporting the camp’s mission through creative program development and ministry leadership. The Program Director will engage in and oversee administrative duties, programming, staffing, risk management, and public relations to ensure high quality experiences for all visitors year-round. Working closely with the Executive Director, this role is integral to fulfilling the camp’s objectives and enhancing its impact.

Responsibilities:

  1. Programming:
  • Work in conjunction with the Executive Director and community partners to develop new, and improve existing program opportunities (including Summer Camp, Winter Camp, Walk to the manager, Future year-round Outdoor Education, Specialty and Adventure programs and Retreats)
  • Develop and implement marketing and promotion strategies for Overlook programs
  • Recruit, interview, hire, train, supervise and evaluate all program staff, including Summer and other seasonal staff.
  • Direct and oversee the operations of program activities offered at Overlook (i.e. Climbing Wall, Zipline, Cooperation course, waterfront, etc.).
  • Develop and Implement evaluation tools for Overlook programs throughout the year
  1. Administration:
  • Assist in developing and managing the Overlook program budget
  • Develop an understanding and use of camp registration software and billing processes
  • Ensure effective communication with participants, caregivers, staff, and volunteers
  • Serve as on-site director in the absence of the Executive Director
  1. Hosting:
  • Participate in Hosting retreat groups as needed, acting as the primary point of contact between Overlook and guest groups during their stay.
  • Assist in marketing and provide tours to potential new groups
  1. Marketing/Promotions:
  • Develop and implement marketing and recruiting strategies to include print, digital, and in-person events

Qualifications and Requirements:

Required:

  • Possess a firm understanding, belief, and faith in Jesus Christ with a willingness to work within a Christian community related by faith to the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church
  • Bachelor’s degree or related experience
  • Minimum twenty-one (21) years of age (Full Time)
  • Valid state driver's license
  • No less than 1 year of strong, documented, experience programming outdoor education, environmental education, adventure and challenge course programming, and organized camping
  • Positive attitude and professional demeanor
  • Solid work ethic, sense of professional ownership, and strong organizational skills
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and desire to foster a sense of community with the staff
  • Strong communication, leadership, and customer service skills

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation management, outdoor education, experiential education, environmental education, adventure education or related field
  • Experience facilitating team building activities, ground-based initiatives, low and high challenge courses, canoe and directing water based activities
  • Certifications: (Have or willing to Obtain) First Aid/CPR/AED, Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, ACCT Level 1 or higher
  • Marketing and promotional background

Benefits: Overlook provides optional on-site housing as well as PTO, Insurance stipend and retirement package. Meals are provided when groups are on-site receiving meal service.
